Day 26 Devo - The Thought Life

Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. ...And the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:8, 9b)

Many times we grieve the Spirit of God by focusing on things that are displeasing to Him. If we willfully concentrate on sinful and sensual things, we can't focus on Jesus.

We cannot look in two different directions at the same time. If we choose to look at the ungodly things the world offers, we must look away from Jesus. We also cannot travel in two different directions at the same time. The direction that the world and our human nature will lead us is exactly opposite from the direction that the Holy Spirit is leading us. We can't go both ways at the same time. it is always an "either/or" type of decision.

Too many Christians are trying in vain to have a little of Jesus, and also a little of the world; a little of His righteousness and holiness, and also a little sensual pleasure; a little godly love, and also a little anger or bitterness. These compromises never work. One of our choices will always take precedence over the other. If you make a practice of regularly looking away from Jesus to think about worldly things, you may soon find yourself not looking at Jesus or thinking about Him at all.

Point to Ponder:

The way to overcome ungodly thoughts is to fill yourself with godly thoughts. There will always be trials and temptations, to be sure, but if you develop a habit of thinking about spiritual things and always focusing on Jesus, you will be victorious. If you'll fill yourself with thoughts that are pleasing to God, God will fill you with Himself, through the Holy Spirit!
