Day 27 Devo - The Obedient Are Filled

Peter tells us that we have been ... chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ....        (1 Peter 1:2)

The Holy Spirit's sanctifying work leads us into obedience to Jesus Christ, our Savior.  The filling of the Holy Spirit is not possible if we're living a life of disobedience.    God had made His will for us known in the Bible, and we have many witnesses of the blessings that come from obedience.  Peter boldly told the self-righteous hypocrites:

We are the witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.        (Acts 5:32)

No matter how great a show we put on for those around us or how much we sacrifice to seem holy, God is unimpressed.  He really only wants us to show our love for Him by obeying Him.  To those who obey Him, He promises to reveal Himself and live in them through the Spirit.

• Read Jesus' promise in John 14:23.

Those who obey His commands live in Him, and He in them.  And this is how we know that He lives in us:  We know it by the Spirit He gave us.

(1 John 3:24)

Point to Ponder:

Many people seek the Holy Spirit's filling in the wrong ways.  They may go to miracle services, follow some preacher's formula, or make ultra-pious sacrifices.  But what God really wants is your love, demonstrated by your obedience to His Word.  For those who want to be more filled with the Holy Spirit - obedience is necessary!!
